The Last Stitch

Pattern Scrapbook

Rather frequently, I'll be inspired to create a pattern for a motif, but it'll languish in my notebook or on my computer without making it to canvas. Every so often, I'll flip through my stash of patterns, combining and expanding upon what's there, but even the results of that process may end up sitting on the back-burner for years. Fragments of pictures, vague concepts of compositions, flashes of inspiration, and bursts of motivation all muddle around my mind and end up here. Take a peek, see if there's anything you like, and feel free to mix-and-match, and add your own flair.

Four Gods - Fushigi Yuugi
[Cross-stitch] [Anime] [Japanese Kanji]

Size: 25W x 50H
Colors: 1
Sources:

  • Japanese Kanji: Jeffrey's Kanji Server
  • Description: Bare-bones kanji patterns for the nameplates of the four cardinal gods found in Chinese mythology, and featured prominently in Fushigi Yuugi, among other places. I might use these along with pictures of the animal forms of the four gods at some point, or possibly as part of a larger piece using the names of each god's respective warriors and priestess (miko). Of course, I could eschew the Fushigi Yuugi reference altogether and do something involving the complex but less-explored story, Dark Angel. Since I haven't made up my mind, here the patterns sit, waiting...

    Ninja Villages - Naruto
    [Cross-stitch] [Anime] [Japanese Kanji]

    Size: 28W x ~60H
    Colors: 1
    Sources:

  • Village symbols: Manga
  • Japanese Kanji: Jeffrey's Kanji Server
  • Description: Inspired by the upcoming tournament-exam in the English adaptation of Naruto, I decided to make a set of plaques covering each of the hidden ninja villages featured in that storyline. Each plaque has the name of the village in kanji and English, and the funky symbol that is featured on the forehead protectors. I haven't stitched this one yet, mainly because I'm trying to decide whether to do the full plaques, or just combine the village-symbols into some kind of scroll or T-shirt design. Given the popularity of the etched-metal forehead protectors, I think the village-symbols would probably do very well stitched into a headband or onto a T-shirt pocket.
