Terry Brooks4 of 5 |
Like a lot of today's fantasy writers, Brooks started off in the business with a familiar-seeming adventure story, complete with the usual suspects, elves and dwarves. However, his more recent work has become at once more daring and more introspective. The frailties and doubts of men well-past youth wouldn't appear to be good fodder for tales of growth and self-discovery, but it works. Delving into the sorrow-tinged tales of faerie, Brooks places his very modern-thinking heroes in old-style predicaments. With little fear of alienating readers, Brooks makes his protagonists almost unsympathetic in their actions, even while their conflicted conciences are laid bare for our delighted examination. | |
